Statutory Signs — BCA-Compliant Building Signage, Made in Sydney

Statutory signage is the signage a building is legally required to carry, not signage a builder chooses to add. Under the National Construction Code, Australian buildings must identify fire and smoke doors, exits and egress paths, electrical and switchboard locations, plant and service rooms, and the areas where entry is restricted. It is checked at handover, and missing or incorrect plates are among the more common reasons a certifier holds up an occupancy certificate.

There are 98 products in this range, manufactured in Artarmon and dispatched Australia-wide. Most are ordered as a package rather than singly: a two-level commercial fit-out typically needs plates on every fire and smoke door, exit level identification in each stairwell, switchboard and distribution board identification, plant and service room plates through back-of-house, and the access restrictions that go with them.

What's in this range

  • Fire door signs — Do Not Obstruct, Do Not Keep Open, fire and smoke door plates and the offences notices. Fire and smoke door requirements come from the NCC, and these are the plates a certifier looks at first.
  • Access — roof access, authorised personnel only, plant and switch rooms, and restricted-area identification.
  • Electrical — main switch room, distribution board and communications room identification. Electrical installations are governed by AS/NZS 3000.
  • Exits — exit and egress identification, including the offences notices applying to fire exits. Exit and emergency signage is governed by AS 2293.
  • Garbage, rubbish and waste — garbage room, waste store and cleaner room identification.
  • Storage — storage room identification and the Furniture and Storage Not Permitted plates used in egress paths.

Materials and finishes

Three substrates are offered across this range. Satin Natural Anodised Aluminium (SNA) is the premium finish, used in lobbies, corridors and anywhere the fixings are visible. Composite — Silver Brushed (ACM) gives a similar appearance at lighter weight and lower cost. Composite — White (ACM) is flat, rigid and well suited to door faces, plant rooms and back-of-house.

The practical point is consistency rather than preference: a floor of service doors reads as one set when the plates share a material and sit at the same height, and that consistency is something certifiers notice and maintenance contractors rely on. Prices run from $35 to $165, with most of the range around $40, and freight is a flat $30 anywhere in Australia.

Working from a schedule or plans

If you have been handed a signage schedule, the categories above follow the order most schedules are written in. If you have floor plans instead, you do not need to work through the catalogue at all — upload them and we will identify the statutory signage the building is required to carry, itemised and priced, as a schedule you can order from or send on for approval.

Where a legend you have been specified is not in the range, custom text is available across these formats. Send us the wording and the size.
