Compliance signage for Australian buildings and worksites

Statutory Signs manufactures and supplies the signage Australian buildings are required to carry, and the safety signage worksites run on. There are 474 products in the range, made and dispatched from Artarmon in Sydney, and they are bought mostly by builders closing out a job, certifiers checking a schedule, facility managers replacing what has gone missing, and fitout trades signing a floor before handover.

Most orders here are a bundle rather than a single plate. A two-level commercial fitout typically needs fire door signage on every fire and smoke door, tactile and braille plates at the accessible amenities, exit level identification in each stairwell, switchboard and plant room identification, and a run of room plates through back-of-house. The categories below are arranged the way a schedule is usually worked through.

What the range covers

Statutory Signs is the compliance core: fire and smoke door plates, exit and egress identification, electrical and switchboard signage, plant and service room identification, and the access restrictions that go with them. These are the plates a certifier looks for and the ones most often raised as a defect at inspection.

Safety Signs is the largest category and covers the day-to-day hazard signage a site or facility runs on, including construction signage, danger and warning plates, factory and warehouse signage, floor marking decals and food safety signage. Fire Safety Signs sits alongside it for fire equipment identification.

Braille and Tactile Signs covers accessible and ambulant sanitary facilities, exit level identification and wayfinding. This signage is governed by AS 1428.1, and it is the part of a schedule most often specified by an access consultant rather than chosen off a shelf. Building Signs covers room and door identification more broadly, including car park, property and hospital signage.

Traffic Signs covers car park and site traffic control, including speed, parking and directional plates. Stencils and Linemarking, Privacy Film and Safety Strips and Custom Signs cover the rest, with custom text available where nothing standard fits the wording you have been given.

Choosing a material

Eight substrates are offered across the range, and the choice is usually about how long the sign has to last and what it is fixing to rather than appearance.

Satin Natural Anodised Aluminium (SNA) is the premium finish for lobbies, corridors and anywhere the fixings are on show. Composite — Silver Brushed (ACM) gives a similar appearance at lighter weight and lower cost. Composite — White (ACM) is the most widely offered substrate in the range: flat, rigid and well suited to door faces and back-of-house. Aluminium 1.6mm is the choice where a plate is screwed or riveted to masonry, steel or an external post and left there.

Polypropylene and Corflute cover temporary and site work, where the plate is effectively consumable and often cable-tied rather than fixed. Sticker and decal (SAV) suits glass, columns, bollards and any surface you would rather not drill. On a variable product the material you choose changes the price, so the figure shown is the starting point rather than the only one.

Formats and pricing

Door and service room identification is generally supplied as a long narrow strip, 600 x 100mm being the most widely used format in the range, which crosses a standard door leaf without fouling a closer arm or a vision panel. Deeper plates carry a second line of text where the legend needs it. Site and hoarding signage runs larger, through 450 x 300mm, 600 x 450mm and 900 x 600mm landscape, chosen on viewing distance rather than preference: a plate that reads well against a hoarding disappears against an open slab.

Prices run from $7.50 for a small polypropylene plate to $620 for large-format work, with most of the range sitting around $35. Freight is a flat $30 anywhere in Australia regardless of order size, and collection from Artarmon is free.

If you are working from plans

If you have floor plans rather than a list, you do not need to work through the catalogue. Upload them and we will identify the statutory signage the building is required to carry, itemised and priced as a schedule you can order from, edit, or send on for approval. If you already know the wording you need and it is not in the range, custom text is available across most formats — send us the legend and the size.
