Car park signs are used to indicate where you can and cannot park your vehicle. They can also provide information such as the amount of time permitted, parking charges and any special rules that may apply.

Carpark signs provide clear direction and parking rules to help guide vehicles safely within a carpark.

Car park signage, from accessible bays to visitor parking

Car park signage divides into two quite different jobs, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying. Most of it is operational — visitor parking, reserved parking, no parking, keep driveway clear, loading and unloading, cycle parking. It tells people where to put a vehicle and carries no particular legal weight beyond what the site's own conditions impose.

The accessible parking signage is different. Bays set aside for people with disability are regulated, and the signage that identifies them is part of what makes the bay compliant rather than merely painted.

Accessible bays

Off-street parking for people with disability is covered by AS 2890.6, which deals with the bay dimensions, the shared area beside it and the signage that identifies it. The accessibility provisions of the National Construction Code pick this up for new work, and a certifier will look for the sign as well as the line marking. The range here covers the common variants — reserved for disabled, disabled parking, parking for disabled only, specially provided bays, and the left and right arrow versions used where a sign serves a bay offset from the post.

If you are signing a route as well as a bay — disabled access, access at the side of the building, wheelchair ramp, accessible toilet — those legends sit in this category too.

Formats and materials

Six sizes are stocked, from 300 × 125mm horizontal up to 900 × 600mm landscape, with 300 × 225mm landscape the most commonly ordered. Materials run from sticker and decal at $7.50, through corflute and polypropylene, to composite ACM and 1.6mm aluminium for permanent outdoor fixing.

  • Sticker or decal — applied directly to a smooth wall, column or existing panel. No fixings, no thickness.
  • Corflute — temporary. Useful during construction or a staged handover, not a permanent answer.
  • Composite ACM or aluminium — what to specify for a bay that will still be there in ten years.

Getting the quantity right

Count the signs off the parking layout rather than the bay count. A run of identical reserved bays usually takes one sign per bay, but a shared zone, a ramp or a driveway crossing may need a single sign covering several. Where bays are numbered to units, the numerals are made to order — send the schedule through and they can be produced as a set.
